Katie works with online service-based businesses (particularly those turning a skill they learned in their corporate job into a business) create and position their offers so they have something people actually want to buy - because let's face it having something people want makes the whole marketing and selling thing a lot easier 😝
Katie's background is as a market research specialist and behavioural sciences geek, understanding how and why people behave the way they do. She now uses these skills to help small businesses understand their audience really deeply, so they can create offers people actually want to buy and talk about them in a way that people want to hear/watch/read.

Hey Katie! 👋 We'd love to know -- where in the world are you? What do you like about it? Dislike?
I'm on the outskirts of London, UK. I love it because London is the most incredible city and I can reach it in 15 minutes by train, but also I'm right on the edge so 15 minutes' walk and I'm in the beautiful English countryside.
What’s your favorite way to create content? What’s your favorite way to consume it? Why?
I love creating video and I have just launched my YouTube/video podcast "The Upside-Up Marketing Podcast" which I'm very excited about! I also love watching video and listening to podcasts because I like to do it while I'm hanging washing or washing up etc - an efficient use of time which stops these mundane chores from being a total bore.
Describe your dream client.
My dream client is someone who has left the corporate world an expert at what they do, and who has now set up as a solopreneur to bring these skills to the world, but they're struggling to find clients beyond referrals from their network. They'd like to be able to bring their skills to a wider audience, but so far their efforts have fallen on deaf ears. People are enthusiastic about what they can offer when they talk about it...but when it comes to actually buying, the sales just aren't there.
Why is that person a dream client? How would you help them?
This person is my dream client because they are approaching their business from a "this is what I have to offer" angle, whereas buyers need to hear a "this is how I can take you from where you are now to where you want to be". Getting that messaging right requires a deep understanding of the people they are trying to sell to, but that's difficult to achieve - it's not as simple as asking "what do you want" (as ultimately people don't really know what they want). I help them by working with them to gain that understanding, then applying it to how they formulate and position their offers, and how they talk about them in their marketing.
What’s a funny anecdote, related to your area of expertise, that you can’t believe you did (or believed)?
When I first started in business I fell for exactly this trap! I came from a very successful career in market research, and when I saw there wasn't really anyone doing that for small businesses in the online space I genuinely wondered how I was going to cope with the demand...!
Of course, going out there and saying "I can do your market research! Who wants some market research?! The pie charts are very pretty" didn't really cut it (turns out not everyone loves pie charts as much as I do!) and I had to learn the hard way about how to use my skills to solve a want and need they actually had - not to expect them to already know how I could help them.
How would you describe MV to an online business owner who’s never heard of it?
An incredible, affordable, easy to use platform for hosting your courses and digital products.
What made you decide to use MV? Why do you keep using MV?

What frustrates or annoys you about using MV?
I think the tripwire sales page could look a bit nicer.
